Professional magician and half of the comedy/magic duo Barry and Stuart, Barry Jones, has released his debut graphic novel, "The Book of Niall". The 240-page, full-colour graphic novel delves into the timely and thought-provoking subject of mental health, specifically the little-known conditions of Depersonalization and Derealization Disorder (DPDR), which affects up to 1% of the population, including the author himself.
"The Book of Niall" tells the story of actor Niall Adams, whose seemingly perfect life is shattered as his grip on reality begins to slip away. Convinced that everyone around him is an actor in a pre-written script, Niall embarks on a journey of self-discovery and understanding as his perception of reality is tested to its limits.
The novel received international support on Kickstarter, with 241 backers pledging £15,017 to bring the project to life. It has also received praise from notable figures in the entertainment and psychology industries, including Matt Lucas, Derren Brown, and Richard Wiseman.
“The Book of Niall is an enthralling exploration of critical issues, both philosophical and psychological. Without being preachy, it suggests answers to timeless questions—and even serves as a guide to when to stop asking them. It is refreshing, challenging, beautiful and unique. I recommend it especially to those who seek out art that does philosophy. It is not, after all, just a comic book,” says David Kyle Johnson, Ph.D. Professor of Philosophy at King’s College (PA).
Author Barry Jones said: “I’ve been living with DPDR for many years now and needed a vessel with which to examine it, as well as a way of hopefully educating others about this mostly unheard of condition, in which the patient feels that the world round them is an illusion.”
"The Book of Niall" is a must-read for young adults and adults alike, offering an enthralling and thought-provoking journey into the mind of a person living with DPDR, and is now available for purchase in paperback and digital formats and can be found at major online retailers.
